To serve the best interest of the structural building component industry TPI is broadening its scope to better reflect its member companies’ interests and to address an important industry need.

TPI, historically known as the Truss Plate Institute, announced today that it is broadening its scope of sound engineering to include technology and machinery to better reflect its member’s business interests, their contributions to the building industry and in support of component manufactures businesses.  This broadening of scope for TPI is in part an outgrowth of discussions between TPI and its industry partner, SBCA, on how the two associations can best serve the best interest of the entire structural building component industry and enhance component manufacturers’ (CM) businesses.  In support of TPI’s broadened scope, TPI is actively pursuing an initiative to address a very immediate industry issue, the need for more efficient and timely communication between new manufacturing equipment and truss design and management software.

TPI is looking to bring suppliers together to get a better understanding of this need and to develop the necessary best practices, and guidelines that will enable more efficient data exchange between equipment for the component manufacturing industry.  An enhanced level of software/machine interface will afford component manufacturers greater flexibility for investing in technology solutions which will benefit suppliers, component manufacturers and the industry.   It is hoped that the solutions that will come out of this initiative will allow for a more “plug-and-play” capability for the supplier’s customers.  The first step for suppliers though, is to have a common understanding of the issues and to agree to a common approach to solve this “plug-and-play” issue.

Join TPI member companies (MiTek, Alpine, Simpson Strong-Tie, Eagle Metal, and Cherokee Metal) along with other suppliers that have signed up to begin to address this industry need.  Contact TPI and sign up to come together and develop a project methodology, scope, timelines, and deliverables.  The goal is to recruit and install this team of interested parties by December 2018 so they can begin work in earnest in the early part of 2019.  To join in the initiative just follow this link; www.tpinst.org/initiatives ; and sign up by 11/30/18.

TPI member companies are committed to this initiative and together we will bring a greater level of technology innovation and flexibility to the industry.

Sign up by 11/30/18 to be a part of the solution!

Second Public Review & Comment Period Opens for the Draft BSR/TPI 3-201X, "Design of Bracing for Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses"

A second Public Review & Comment period for the draft BSR/TPI 3-201X “Design of Bracing for Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses” is now open. The Public Review & Comment period will be open until October 19th, 2015.

TPI began the process of developing the new TPI 3 standard in March of 2009 with the formation of a Project Committee representing a cross section of the industry. The first draft of the standard was open for review and comment on August 8th, 2014. After carefully considering all of the comments received in the first review period, the Project Committee made several substantive revisions to the draft standard and therefore have initiated a second Public Review and Comment period to allow for comments on these changes.

Those wishing to comment on the draft TPI 3 standard should submit comments to TPI using the TPI 3-201X Public Review COMMENT SUBMITTAL FORM prior to the close of the Public Review Period on October 19th, 2015. Additional information about the TPI 3 project, including project scope and draft download information can be found on the TPI 3 Project page.

Printed copies of the draft standard are also available for $20 each plus tax and shipping & handling (prepaid by check or money order) and can be ordered directly from TPI.  Send your request with check or money order to Truss Plate Institute, 218 North Lee Street, Suite 312; Alexandria, VA 22314, (703) 683-1010.

ANSI/TPI 1-2014 now available

The Truss Plate Institute is happy to announce the release of the new ANSI/TPI 1-2014, "National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction." This publication is an update to the ANSI/TPI 1-2007 and is now available for purchase online from the Truss Plate Institute at our online store. The new ANSI/TPI 1-2014 standard is available in hard copy or in a downloadable electronic form and comes with a Commentary & Appendices.

New in the 2014 edition are provisions for Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for metal plate connected wood trusses, expanded deflection limitations to accommodate provisions often specified by Building Designers, and a reorganized Design Responsibilities chapter. The Commentary, that is included with the purchase of the Standard, provides a complete list of the non-editorial changes that were made in the 2014 edition (also available HERE). The 2014 edition of the TPI 1 standard is referenced in the 2015 editions of the International Residential Code and in the International Building Code.

Proposed "Standard for Testing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses " Open for Public Review & Comment.

The Truss Plate Institute (TPI) announced today the opening of a Public Review & Comment
period for the draft BSR/TPI 2-201X “Standard for Testing Metal Plate Connected Wood
Trusses” (See Press Release). The Public Review & Comment period is open until August 11, 2014.

TPI began the process of developing the new TPI 2 standard in March of 2009 with the formation of a Project Committee representing a cross section of the industry. This standard is a replacement for the former ANSI/TPI 2-1995 standard. The draft, now open for Public Review, is the culmination of the Project Committee’s efforts.

Comments are being solicited to ensure that the views of all interested parties have been given full consideration. The draft BSR/TPI 2-201X provides procedures for testing & evaluating wood trusses designed & fabricated with metal connector plates. Destructive load tests of full scale trusses in accordance with these procedures provide a means of demonstrating that minimum adequate performance is obtainable from specific metal connector plates, various lumber types and grades, a particular truss design, particular fabrication procedures, etc.

Those wishing to participate in the Public Review of the draft BSR/TPI 2-201X standard should
visit TPI’s web site (www.tpinst.org/TPI2PC.html ) or contact the Truss Plate Institute at 703-
683-1010 for further information.

Copies of the draft BSR/TPI 2-201X, are available as a free download at TPI’s web site
www.tpinst.org/TPI2PC.html . Printed copies of the list of revisions to the TPI 1-2007 standard
are available for $20 each plus tax, shipping & handling (prepaid by check or money order) and can be ordered directly from TPI at 218 North Lee Street, Suite 312; Alexandria, VA 22314,
(703) 683-1010.
