ANSI/TPI 1-2022 PROJECT

The ANSI/TPI 1 standard is maintained following ANSI’s periodic maintenance schedule, which requires the entire standard to be re-opened for revisions, reaffirmation, or withdrawal on a five-year cycle based on the last ANSI approval date as an American National Standard. The most recent edition of the ANSI/TPI 1 standard, approved on December 23rd, 2022, represents the culmination of a project that commenced in 2019 and reached completion in 2022. This edition embodies the latest advancements and insights in the field, ensuring its relevance and applicability to current industry practices.

For a more detailed understanding of the update process, please refer to the information provided below.

ANSI/TPI 1 Scope

The TPI 1 standard establishes minimum requirements for the design and construction of metal plate connected wood trusses. This standard describes the materials used in a truss, both lumber and steel, and design procedures for truss members and joints. Methods for evaluating the metal connector plates, manufacturing quality assurance, and responsibilities in the design process involving metal plate connected wood trusses are also contained in the standard.

ANSI/TPI 1-2022 Project

COMPLETED PHASE 1: Project Initiation (see below for more information)

COMPLETED PHASE 2: Project Committee Formation (see below for more information)

COMPLETED PHASE 3: Project Committee Work and Balloting (see below for more information)

COMPLETED PHASE 4: Public Review (see below for more information)

COMPLETED PHASE 5: Final Approval (see below for more information)

PHASE 1: Project Initiation - COMPLETED

As an accredited ANSI American National Standards Developer, TPI must ensure that the ANSI/TPI 1 standard remains current and relevant by means of timely revision or reaffirmation. TPI accomplishes this through the periodic maintenance procedures as defined in ANSI’s Essential Requirements, which requires the review of the entire standard and action to revise or reaffirm it on a schedule not to exceed five years from the date of its approval as an American National Standard. The ANSI/TPI 1-2014 standard was  last approved as an American National Standard in August 2014. Therefore, it will be opened for revision/reaffirmation in August 2019.

TPI provides notification of standards activity using the ANSI Project Initiation Notification System (PINS), and through TPI press releases. See the current notifications below:

PHASE 2: Project Committee Formation - COMPLETED

A consensus body (or Project Committee) is selected by TPI from a list of qualified applicants to hear, discuss, and vote on any proposed changes to the TPI 1 standard. The Project Committee is carefully appointed to ensure that it is appropriately balanced with parties that are materially affected by the standard. For the ANSI/TPI 1 standard, this includes the following categories of members:

  • Producers: MPC Wood Truss Manufacturers, Metal Connector Plate Manufacturers, Lumber Producers, Product Associations, and any others that produce or promote products for the Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss industry.

  • Users: Engineers, Architects, Building Officials, Building Designers, Truss Designers, and any others that use the ANSI/TPI 1 standard in their business.

  • General Interest: Academia, Code Development Organizations, Consumer Associations, Homeowners, Other Industries

The TPI 1 Project Committee application period closed on December 31, 2019. A 32-member balanced committee has been selected consisting of 7 GENERAL INTEREST members, 12 PRODUCER members, and 13 USER members. The committee roster can be viewed HERE.

PHASE 3: Project Committee Work and Balloting - COMPLETED

The Consensus Body (or Project Committee) reviews all of the proposed changes to the TPI 1 standard, which may come from the Consensus Body members or any interested party that wishes to have their suggestions considered by the TPI 1 Project Committee. The proposals are discussed and refined within the Project Committee, and if deemed persuasive by a majority of the Project Committee, are added to the official Committee ballot. The final part of this phase consists of formal voting by the Consensus Body until a consensus, as per PCMAC, is achieved.

PHASE 4: Public Review - COMPLETED

The updated standard is released for public review once the Project Committee reaches a consensus. Any interested party can review the work of the Project Committee and submit comments or suggestions to the Committee. All public review comments and suggestions are reviewed by the Project Committee, and those determined to be persuasive by a majority vote of the Committee are incorporated into the draft standard. If any changes are considered substantive, the Project Committee will re-vote on the updated standard. All Public Review commenters receive a notification of the status of their suggestion and a rationale for the decision made by the Project Committee.

PHASE 5: Approval - COMPLETED

The TPI Board of Directors approved a recommendation from the TPI Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to submit a BSR-9 form to ANSI as the final step in approving the updated TPI 1 standard. TPI submitted a BSR-9 form and supporting documentation to ANSI on 11/16/2022 and received ANSI’s final approval on 12/23/2022. The ANSI/TPI 1-2022 National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction is now available in hard copy or electronic form at TPI’s web store.
